Emotional Freedom Techniques
EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique) is one of many energy psychology methods. It is often referred to as ‘acupuncture for the emotions, without the needles’. This process involves tapping on certain meridian points whilst focusing on a particular thought, emotion or behavior. The intensity of an emotion etc. and decrease within minutes, even seconds. It allows easy access to the subconscious mind and easy release of any negativity.
Negative emotions, experiences, and trauma’s cause a disruption in our energy system and vice versa. They get stored in our bodies, our mind and our energy field. And if held onto for long enough they cause pain, stress, anxiety, depression, illness, phobias and other issues.
EFT Tapping is an easy self-help tool that enables us to change our emotional state, thought patterns, and stress responses. It helps to bring balance back into the energy system and the emotions that become disrupted as a result of perceiving something as stressful, uncomfortable or threatening. This tool is also a great way of bring yourself back into present moment awareness and control of your thoughts & emotions. It is a technique that can be easily learned for use at home. Used in therapy with an experienced therapist, deep and profound change can be made.
The video’s and pdf explains how to apply Tapping. The traditional process of EFT Tapping involves beginning by tapping on the ‘side of the hand’ point whilst voicing your ‘set up statement’. The set up statement involves acknowledgement and self acceptance around the ‘issue’ you are tapping for. This step creates more self awareness and self acceptance and ownership of the problem at hand. It can also help us to be more compassionate towards ourselves. Once the set up statement step is complete, you tap around the points whilst voicing or thinking about the problem, and how it makes you feel.
Even though there are certain steps in the Tapping process, when you are in a state of high stress, anxiety, overwhelm or extreme pain as a example, it is also important to not overthink the tapping process. In a situation like this, the simplest method that I came up with to help my clients is ‘FEEL & TAP’.
To do this you simply notice what you are feeling and where it is showing up, eg. tension in the shoulders, or tightness in the chest etc. Notice what you are FEELING and TAP on any of the points that you remember, or the points that are suitable for the situation.
Happy Tapping!
By affecting a change in our thought and emotions in a positive way,
we change our energy and physiology
“ Tapping produces changes in the body’s thought and energy fields, which in turn creates changes at the physiological level, leading to reduced stress, anxiety and fear ”- Roger J. Callahan, Ph.D., Energy therapy pioneer.
The stress response or ‘fight/flight’ response is designed to prepare our bodies for reacting fast in a dangerous/unsafe situation. Back in the cave era this enabled us to stay safe. We need to be able to flee the situation or fight when in danger, so the brain releases the hormones that enable us to do this. The amygdala and hippocampus (the stress centre on the brain) will decide if a situation is threatening and then set about releasing the ‘fight/flight’ hormones.
The problem is that thought alone can trigger the stress response, this is due to the fact that the parts of the brain that control this is sub-conscious and the sub-conscious brain does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined in thought.
So if you imagine something stressful or think about past or possible future stressful situations the stress response will still kick in.
Tapping appears to affect the amygdala and hippocampus. It brings us into more awareness about a situation and then once we realise we are not in danger, it is just a thought, we quickly calm down. EFT has also been shown to lower cortisol levels, which is the stress hormone -too much cortisol reduce our immune function and affect our physical health.

The evidence is there, with many clinical trials showing the effectiveness of this tool. For more info on the science behind tapping go to www.petastapleton.com
